Discursive Picnic_HOCHsitz(en) on the roadside

On Sunday, July 1, 2018 at 3 pm UNWETTER with Schmuck2 and the artist Tanja Zimmermann from Klein Warin invite everyone to the Discursive Picnic_HOCHsitz(en) on the roadside, just before Glashagen Ausbau, 5 km from Bad Doberan. On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of Schmuck2 and the release of their latest edition ”spring/summer 16_green gold“ ,we look forward to meeting you at the picnic!

The Discursive Picnic connects contexts, material, questions and thoughts through an ongoing process of a potluck-fashioned gathering for enhancing reciprocal exchange – where everybody becomes guest and host at the same time.

Bring your ideas, art, work, projects, publications, food, drinks, picnic utensils or just come as you are. We are looking forward to meeting you! Discursive Picnic_HOCHsitz(en) on the roadside circles around the issue of drought and the subject „water“ – bringing containers and teacups from all over the world. You can bring your bottled water-samples of open water sites and photo-documentation of the procedure for the work of the Japanese artist Yukio Togo.

The Discursive Picnic was developed by the interdisciplinary UNWETTER collective for documenta11.

For 20 years, Schmuck2 fosters international cooperation pondering the function limitations and understanding of jewelry in contemporary society. www.schmuck2.de

We thank Makra Bau GmbH for their support of our projects around the HOCHsitz. makra-systemholzbau.de

Suwan Laimanee*, TanzArt Labor, Travis Meinolf, UNWETTER

————————————————————————
*"Massage is the message" – Suwan Laimanee's work is about the physical touch of art and its sculptural process. He introduced massage as art and science in 1996 at the Florence Biennale, as part of Michelangelo Pistoletto's Progetto Arte. Thai massage is another form of social sculpture. It is real and it is spiritual. There is no giver (artist) and receiver (recipient) because both are united in oneness.

The Publication pöpp68 - participation objections anyhow of the exhibition project privat öffentlich persönlich politisch inNeue Gesellschaft für Bildende Kunst Berlin, and the conference on Participation at the Akacemie der Künste Berlin in 2008 comes with texts and interviews referring to UNWETTER’s practice by and with Christophe Kotányi, Raimar Stange, Benno Gammerl, Ulrike Solbrig and Jole Wilcke (--> Catalog excerpt: PDF)

With six collaborative projects, a conference, and an exhibition, pöpp68 - private, public, personal, political" targeted and probed possible modes for participation in art.

In 2008 pöpp68 brought together artists born in the 1960s (Seraphina Lenz, Nanna Lüth, Ulrike Solbrig, Rebekka Uhlig, Giuliano Vece, Jole Wilcke) with artists and theorists that were already active in 1968 (Claudia von Alemann, Kirsten Dufour, Rainer W. Ernst, Sanja Ivekovic´ & Bojana Pejic´, Barbara Kleinitz, Christophe Kotányi) allowing them to revisit some of the complex issues that became prominent features of political and social discourse in '68, like fascism, body and power, gender politics, consumption critique, as well as a more general questioning of authority; while also giving opportunities for participation in workshops and other avenues for exploration and intervention. As an intergenerational forum, pöpp68 looked at the chances for participation and forms of resistance from 1968 to the present.

The publication "pöpp68 - participation objections anyhow" documents and contextualizes the entire project, the conference "on participation" at the Akademie der Künste and the exhibition at NGBK, Berlin, with workshop descriptions and text contributions by Espace Masolo, Stephan Geene, Sabine Hark, Barbara Loreck, Suzana Milevska, Rahel Puffert, Veronica Sekules, Raimar Stange, Eva Sturm, Wiebke Trunk, Ultra-red, and others.

UN
WETTER and Mobile Kultur Byrå to be guest/host at the Discursive Picnic_10th Anniversary of the Russian Market in Memory of Ellisif Wessel on Thursday 25.09.08 from 2 pm at the sqare in the tent in Kirkenes, Norway

2008 / 09 / 04 – 8 am – 4 pm

Discursive Picnic_8 Hours Don't Make a Day, Thursday September 4th, 2008 from 8 am till 4 pm at Alexanderplatz – between exit U2 (in front of Saturn at Alex) and the Fountain of the Friendship between Peoples with Matthias Krause and Patrick Gardener.

You/we are invited! Bring/take ideas, food/drinks, picnic utensils, work results, opinions, large potatoes and daily newspapers with want k sections and a tablecloth for printing!

We make potato prints instead of fine print!

With newspaper want ads, we want to make new paper plates.
Either unemployment or unpayed overtime everybody has to be flexible, preferrably for 24 hours a day, as the title of the American anti terror TV-series (2001 - 2010) suggests. By taking up the title of Fassbinder’s 1970’s television series 8 Hours Don't Make a Day we want to reintroduce the positive notion, that a society – in case that for instance payed labor doesn't take up more than 8 hours per working day – is able to transform itsef.

With workstation, idea workshop e.V., the Holy Church of the Last Three Workdays and other activists of /unvermittelt*, who in open workshops will present, discuss and advance their projects. Children are welcome to join in.

Discursive Picnic_8 Hours Are Not a Day, is a location in a public space of the campaign "/unvermittelt", by workstation, idea workshop Berlin e. V., also presented at the New Society for Visual Arts, NGBK, in November 2008 – /unvermittelt - für einen Arbeitsbegriff jenseits von Überarbeitung und Mangel. Praxen, Techniken, Spielräume.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE third annual alt.SPACE FESTIVAL, took place in July 2007 in and around London, in host venues as well as in public space. Within the context of an overall engagement with the notion of 'the revolutionary & the radical' the festival was an attempt to highlight the increasing number of self-organized collaborative structures that operate within the field of cultural production, particularly those that explicitly address issues of collectivity and collective learning as an alternative to institutional research and educational structures.

”´Discursive Picnic´ - "Collective Curating in an Extended Field” – lecture at " Collective Curating " Aarhus Denmark

"Walk-Talk-Eat-TalkSomeMore" Experimental Hybrid, April 2006
Co-organized by: C.CRED & BASEKAMP

Walk-Talk-Eat-TalkSomeMore is a multi-city, multi-day project in and between London, Philadelphia, Chicago, New York, Malmö, Portland,
Stockholm, Tallinn, Berlin and San Francisco. The project is an experimental hybrid of similar work by Ccred & the 16 beavergroup
(Counter Cartographies, Alt.Space), BASEKAMP & The Institute for Advanced Architecture (Evident Use), 0009 (platial) and the Bureau of
Research into Post Autonomy.

The idea behind this series of events is to link a number of different cities in a critical dialogue around the very lose notion of "post-autonomy" and the more specific theme: how can we construct a practice in the discursive space of post-autonomy?

The program includes three interlinked components: a collective counter.cartography walk through our different contexts; an alt.space meal (supper, dinner, luncheon) taking place in our different cities and linking us through the questions we pose to one another; and a concluding discussion taking the form of a web-cast linking us in real-time dialogue.

Discursive Picnic_INTERVENING THE URBAN VOID, PSWR Amsterdam, Netherlands

You are, we are invited to join the DISCURSIVE PICINC at Public Space With A Roof - on the floor, on the blanket. Be a guest, be a host. IDEAS. FOOD. TALK. Bring, give, take, share : food + thought. UNWETTER is an international, Berlin based group of artists, curators, critics, theorists and activists. The most important goal of UNWETTER's work is knowledge production in and about the drastic world-changes brought about by the process of globalization. UNWETTER brings together artistic, theoretical and political practice. We operate in public space as well as in an art context. We cooperate with local initiatives and establish temporary situations (picnics, walks, camps, etc.), which connect strands of research and streams of knowledge. http://people.freenet.de/unwetter

PRESENTATIONS Universal Embassy Universal Embassy highlights the urgent situation of 'personnes sans papiers' (people without papers), and tries to help them overcome their social isolation. In 2001 the former Somalian Embassy in Brussels was squatted by 'personnes sans papiers' after Somalia lost state-status as a result of severe civil war in that country. Universal Embassy brings together individuals who suffer the discrimination of not belonging to a nation. Universal Embassy appoints its own diplomats and produces its own Universal passports. Mohamed Benzaouia is the first person to obtain a Belgian passport through the Universal Embassy, and he will tell his and the Embassy's story. Mohamed Benzaouia and Kobe Matthys presented the Universal Embassy, Brussels. http://www.universal-embassy.be

C.CRED: Ola Stahl, Kajsa Thelin and Carl Lindh What is a network? What are the potentials and limits of the network as a mode of artistic production? What are the possibilities, problems and limits encountered when working politically as an artist in the city? C.CRED CREative Dissident is a London-based artist collective that maps critical art-practices, initiatives and individuals in the counter/cartography project. In Intervening the Urban Void C.CRED used a mobile workstation to organize meetings in public spaces in the city where you could discuss, question and exchange ideas, accompanied by music, hot wine and screenings. The meetings were followed by journeys around the city based on sites identified during the discussion. These meetings and journeys then formed a part of our archive and the expanding counter/cartographies of the project. C-CRED presented the Counter Cartography Archive including the materials collected in Amsterdam.

Gentrified_Discursive Picnic Malmø

In Malmö from the 13th to the 15th of August 2004 we will take up a model which was put into practice during the Gujarat conflict in New Delhi in 2002: For at least two weeks, day and night, artists, musicians, intellectuals opened up a location in a public space, next to an arterial road, for contributions of all kinds.

DISCURSIVE CAMPING - dwelling on the move, will set up its tents for the first time, in an off road situation in the city space of Malmø, from the 13th to 14th of August, and on the 15th in the Rooseum, the local Center of Contemporary Art. It will take up and continude the multiple threads and practices that emerged around the DISCURSIVE PICNICS held in Kassel, Vienna, Belgrade, Malmö, Berlin and Oslo since 2002.

The DISCURSIVE PICNIC as well as the DISCURSIVE CAMPING work as a potluck, where everybody is both guest and host at the same time. In Malmö we will invite local groups as well as contributions from other parts of the world. There will be space for presentations, concerts, video screenings, games - theoretical and practical, seductive and dry - whatever comes up. Our aim is to open up a situation for both spontaneous and thoroughly elaborated contributions where visitors, guests, or the public become actors, performers, hosts, then listeners and audience again, in continuously changing roles.

People need only arrive from different directions and unpack what they have brought along. We don't expect a sophisticated, harmonious order of events to level out difference. Perhaps what results will be more like a stumbling over spontaneously arising melodies, clashes and narratives. Blankets, food and drinks are always welcome.

WE/YOU ARE: INVITED! Please join us.

Examples of what will be presented within DISCURSIVE CAMPING: I LOVE MY INDIA: This video is set against the backdrop of genocide against the minority Indian Muslim community in the state of Gujarat (starting Feb 2002). It takes place (one year after the genocide) at a popular public recreational space, that of the 'balloon target shooting'. The text I LOVE MY INDIA acts as a catalyst and the board as an interface screen within the visual space, through which larger concepts of religion, national identity, self & community are mitigated. It's performance set within the recreation & violence in the everyday while drawing comments on the world's 'largest democracy'. The responses are sometimes hilarious and often apathetic. Culminating in a sense of loss, of a perceived nationhood and a love for home. (Tejal Shah video 10 min)

THE PAVILION - a movable installation as a space to dwell on THE PAVILION unfolds its space between flexible architectural elements which host material collections as connections to other theoretical, historical and geographical fields and seductive interfaces like the offer of free tea, table tennis or a party. An assemblage of the VIDEO ATLAS will be the focus of attention of the installations in Malmö. During her fieldtrips in the last years, Dorothee Albrecht collected video-statements from groups, projects, collectives, all exploring non-academic or marginal areas of knowledge production. These include small try-outs, soft and delicate attempts, convincing and very professional strategies to build up own methods and channels, to challenge hegemonic world views. (Dorothee Albrecht)

The Art(s) of HÔTE investigates the in/distinction of guest and host-states that are named by the French word l’hôte. (Duchamp: ‘a guest + a host = a ghost’). The project DRESS - THE SEASONS 1: Theory_to_go covers terrain from weatherconditions to processes of self-organization that come as fashions (Art of HÔTE-t-shirts, “I AM YOUR GHOST”-wearables, candy wraps).

Everything in the world is doomed to decompose The project compares the production, harvest and transport of imported and autochthonous vegetables and makes their decompostition processes visible. How do differences, produced within a globalised economy, (de)materialize? (Benno Gammerl)

A video work that will document the new flourishing of small scale farming in Berlin. It can be seen as an example of a world wide phenomenon of initiatives dealing with the economic crisis by being productive and forming social networks as well as building a public platform for cultural integration and exchange. (Ulrike Solbrig)

Time to Market / Das Wetter erklären The project explores methods for the valuation of knowledge and information in the capitalist society. The re-organisation of knowledge in the global knowledge-based economy and its understanding of value-production: wealth of nations/weather of nations. (Jole Wilcke)

List of the participants: Dorothee Albrecht, Mattias Arvastsson, Philipp Ekardt, Benno Gammerl, Anke Haarmann, Farida Heuck, Andrea Melloni, Emmanuel Nyberg, Miguel Rothschild, Simon Sheikh, Ira Schneider, Tejal Shah, David Sickinger, Ulrike Solbrig, Jole Wilcke, Christine Wolfe, Elena Zanichelli and further people and groups from Malmö and its surroundings.

Old Habits Die Hard, Fifty artist-run spaces and artist's networks were invited by the organizers, to submit what they considered the best video art work they have encountered, 'their favorit video work'. Old Habits Die Hard is organized in nine video programs that each feature between three to ten videos and run for approximately one hour. The video programs will be screened at Trafo during a two-week period.

"Old habits die hard" is an exhibition-in-progress, where artists-run spaces and collectives around the world are invited to participate. By utilising existing networks, spaces and collectives are asked to select an artist video, which will become part of the exhibition. "Old habits die hard" can be seen as a necessary trigger for updating audiences about the presence and work of these spaces and collectives. In line with our work at Sparwasser HQ, "Old habits die hard" seeks to connect people and platforms together for exhibition opportunities and peer support, in a bid to be less dependent on insitutional situations offered by museums and cultural bodies. "Old habits die hard" relies on the context of how these artist-run spaces and collectives exist and how they select the video. This would inevitably express the content building process, that will be evident within the exhibition.

2003/09/28 – 3 pm

From September 28th – 30th, Unwetter will be in G. U. N.. The opening reception will be held on Sunday September 28th at 3 pm. with a Discursive Picnic, to which we invite all to bring food and refreshments. It will be followed by a film evening.

On Monday you are welcome to join us at 3 pm for an Unwetter Walk_Oslo.
Under the term Unwetter artists, activists and theorists work together at non-academic knowledge production. The catalyst for this was the one year long Ideas Lab and Thinking and Doing Documenta, Sarat Maharaj offered as part of his guest professorship tenure at Humboldt University, Berlin, in 2001 and 2002. Like an „Unwetter“, global upheavals swirl around the knowledge systems that previously where in place. This opens up spaces that we stroll through and investigate. Interrelationships between individuals, projects, ideas and material of all kinds are worked on in an experimental mode. In shifting formations, from one, to five, to one hundred (networks), we proceed through practical and theoretical means. Different project threads develop. The resulting material is collected in boxes.

The basic format of Unwetter is the Discursive Picnic which connects different contexts into an ongoing process of reciprocal exchange. the Discursive Picnic functions as a potluck, where everybody is both guest and host at the same time. We arrive, we unpack the Unwetter-Thermobox, we exchange, alter, repack and move on in different directions, to meet somewhere again.
